Each seasons offers a different lens through which to see the Southern Highlands. In autumn explore local villages, enjoy Wine Harvest Feast, see the changing amber and golden hues of our hiking trails, forage for mushrooms or attend Bundanoon is Brigadoon. 

Winter brings roaring fires, whisky tastings, truffle hunts, Feast of the Beast in the forest and Winterfest. By Spring we have major events like Southern Highland Food & Wine Festival, Tulip Time and the Highlands Arts Trail which quickly leads into Summer when swimming in waterfalls beckons or cycling through vast forests to feel the wind on your face is just the tonic for the heat.

Each time of year is unique and any time of perfect to take in the view from above via helicopter or sample some of the cool climate wines the region has become famous for.

Hops | Harvest | Brew - Feb 2019

The ultimate Paddock to Pint experience

During hops harvest season, Southern Highlands Brewing are offering a unique opportunity to visit their farm in Sutton Forest where they grow hops for their micro brewery and be part of the craft brewing process. Exclusive to Wild Food Adventures, this once a year opportunity, is available during February 2019. 

Start the day at the Southern Highlands Brewing Property in Sutton Forest with a tour of the brewing plant followed by hops harvesting in the field before enjoying some craft beer tasting from their award winning local range. We then transfer to Moss Vale to indulge in a beer matched lunch at their new restaurant and bar – The Taphouse.

Scheduled Weekly Tour price is $295 per person including GST, Sydney pick up and return in a luxury vehicle, beer samplers and lunch.  Self Drive is $195 per person

Fungi | Forage | Vine - April & May 2019

Mushroom foraging with a local expert

Autumn means there are mushrooms in the forest. Your day starts as we embark on fresh Mushroom Hunt with Highland local ‘master forager’ Joanne who runs an outdoor laboratory, growing a large variety of edible flowers, fruits, vegetables, herbs and edible ‘weeds’. She supplies local restaurants like Biota and Grand Bistro with her produce. Ravenous and eager to try the freshest of mushrooms you have carefully located, we will pan fry them with butter and salt until they perfectly caramelised and serve with fresh locally made sour dough.

Then it’s on to Bowral to explore Dirty Janes Antique Market & The MillBrowse the main street of Bowral taking in village life with all its small town charm and big city sophistication. An assortment of 70 stalls displays everything from Bakelite phones and enamel kitchenware to vintage lighting, old camera equipment and retro art. Wander down Bong Bong street to also take in The Mill precinct from the organics Bare Body & Beauty PlayStation to Yes Cheese and the handmade artisan chocolates at Ms Peacock. There is something for all the family in this urban oasis.  We then take in some wine tasting or perhaps just warm coffee by the fire as the cooler autumn weather sets in. Bendooley Estate is a magnificent 200 acre property owned by the Berkelouw family in Berrima that produces cool climate wines. Our visit includes taking in the iconic Berkelouw Book Barn and Rare Book Room as well as enjoying either a afternoon tea or charcuterie/cheese platter with your Wine Tasting.

Winter Truffle Hunts - June to Aug 2019

As Winter descends upon the Southern  Highlands so does the opportunity to enjoy fresh truffles. During June, July & the first half of August, Wild Food Adventures offers the opportunity to visit Robertson Truffles for an exclusive experience and take in some of the local sights as well.

First, we take in an award wining vineyard on the way out to Roberston to sample some cool climate wines. Upon arrival at the Truffle Farm we start with light refreshments and an information session on these coveted French Black Perigold Truffles before we head into the Iles and Robur Oak trees to watch the truffle dogs follow the mystical aroma of these tubular delights and unearth them from the tree roots. We finish our visit with a 2 course lunch where you get to sample these treasures with matched local wines. On our outbound trip we stop at Belmore or Carrington Falls lookout to take in the views of the region before a final warm drink by the fire at the 150 year old Grand Manor, The Robertson Hotel.

Fire | Forge | Froth

From Autumn, through Winter and into Spring we run our artisan day tours. Fire | Forge | Froth is artisan heaven – starting the day at the Blacksmith Shop at 1910 Ironworks and forging in fire your own fire poker, twisted skewer or ‘S’ hook in a 3 hour workshop.

Followed by lunch prepared by an award winning chef with a local craft beer sampler at the Southern Highland Brewery restaurant The Taphouse.
